Concept:

11. Planning for Remedial Teaching

Identify the Learning Gap

Check whether the child:

  • Counts every object individually even when equal groups are present.
  • Does not understand the meaning of “times”.
  • Confuses the number of groups with the number in each group.
  • Cannot convert repeated addition into multiplication.
  • Has difficulty skip counting.
  • Memorises tables without understanding the pattern.
  • Cannot understand division as equal sharing.
  • Gives unequal quantities while distributing objects.
  • Does not know which operation is required in a word problem.
  • Finds it difficult to connect multiplication and division.

Remedial Sequence

Step 1 – Concrete Equal Groups

Use counters.

Example:

Make 3 groups of 4.

Child physically creates:

●●●● | ●●●● | ●●●●

Then say:

4 + 4 + 4 = 12

and finally:

3 × 4 = 12

Step 2 – Picture Representation

Move from real objects to drawings of equal groups.

Step 3 – Number Line

Use jumps:

0 → 4 → 8 → 12

Connect the jumps to:

3 × 4 = 12

Step 4 – Skip Counting

Practise one table at a time through movement:

  • Clap by 2
  • Jump by 3
  • Tap by 4
  • Step by 5

Step 5 – Division Through Sharing

Give 12 counters to 3 children.

Let the child physically distribute them equally.

Then record:

12 ÷ 3 = 4

Step 6 – Connect Operations

Use fact families:
